I know – all presidents and their wives take vacations. It seemed, though, that all the Republicans who “vacationed” during Christmas went to their own homes or ranches. But then, why would Obama want to go to Chicago? The weather isn’t very nice there in winter.

I took the 5th and 6th off from work to make a long weekend. Unfortunately, I’ve been on honey-do detail since then. I did some repairs and treated the deck, then installed and painted crown molding in our family room (something I had the idea to do about 4 years ago – just getting around to it). It looks good. I’m finishing up the painting now. I think this is the first time I’ve gone two days without posting since I started back in 2009. Anyway, I’ll get back to the normal posting routine here in the next 12 hours or so.

On vacation? Get sick while you’re out? No problem, says an EU court; just take another vacation (with pay of course).
For most Europeans, almost nothing is more prized than their four to six weeks of guaranteed annual vacation leave. But it was not clear just how sacrosanct that time off was until Thursday, when Europe’s highest court ruled that workers who happened to get sick on vacation were legally entitled to take another vacation.

For the rest of the week it looks like we’ll be tracking the progress of Hurricane Irene. That’ll give us a chance to ignore lots of other stuff, like the Obama’s vacation in Martha’s Vineyard. Yeah, that won’t happen entirely, but Irene will suck up some of the air for news organizations.

We left the hotel taxi stand at 6:55 last night, and arrived back in Glen Allen at 2:00 AM. Traffic wasn’t bad, except right when we came out of the Holland Tunnel. The rest of the trip was pretty uneventful – just long when you’re tired from three full days of schlepping around the city. We saw the great stuff the city has to offer, and my Mom had a good time on her first trip to the city in 51 years.
