There was a time when cooler heads, and common sense would have prevailed and the school could have called the mother to explain to her son that he can’t make politically incorrect statements or gestures in certain places. I love how the school described his completely boy-like behavior as a “serious incident” where he “threated to shoot a student” – with his finger. Idiots.

I had one of these for a couple of years. It traveled always in the lower outside pocket of my backpack, which made trips through several airports, and never raised an eyebrow. This past summer, along with friends from here in Richmond, I did a one-act play for a convention of Christiantravel agents (I know, right?) in Joplin Missouri. To get there, we flew into the bustling metropolis of Branson. If you’ve never been there, it’s kind of a weird setup: it’s set up on the flattened-off top of an Ozark hill, and has about 10 miles of winding two-lane road before you get to the closest major highway. It’s quaint, and outdoorsy, and charming.
