Very good article on two developer brothers challenging the union-dominated status quo in Philadelphia.
Brutish threats, expletive-heavy protests, oil poured at construction-site entrances–for years, Philly unions have used intimidation and bully tactics to protect their power. Then two young developers set up cameras and a website, and set in motion the most dramatic power shift the city has seen in generations.

I’ve read several accounts of “flash mobs” being orchestrated in cities around the country for the purpose of robbing innocent citizens, or stores, or just creating some havoc and terrorizing the populace. Here’s an account of it happening -with a group of girls- in Northeast D.C. The end of the report shows the same thing happening with a group of teenagers in Germantown, MD. They just walk in, with what appears to be no apprehension whatsoever, and take what they want. Some even walk out the door, like there’s no real hurry, ’cause nobody’s going to stop them, anyway.
What is disturbing about this particular account is the reactions from folks the reporter interviewed. Aside from the “that’s crazy”, or “what, a bunch of girls? I don’t believe it” comments, some of the people are trying to justify it because of “tough economic times” or because “people are starving.” I call bullshit on that. This is just plain lawlessness, played out where the perpetrators know pretty much NOTHING will happen as a result of it. Not one of those criminals in either of the video incidents looked like they missed many meals. They also took mainly candy and soda – the “starving” story doesn’t cut it.

Actually, it would have to be open carry in Illinois, where these attacks took place. Illinois and Wisconsin are the only holdouts that don’t allow concealed carry under any circumstances. At least, not for law-abiding citizens. Criminals can conceal all the weapons they like – so they are free to roam about committing crimes against people and property, knowing they won’t get shot by a citizen.

This is astounding – in its wastefulness and stupidity. The old Giants stadium in the Meadowlands of New Jersey -the one they tore down to make a parking lot for the “new Giants stadium”- still has $110 million in debt outstanding. And, they’re not alone – Ken Belson explains in a New York Times article that many municipalities are still paying for “ghost” facilities:
