Of all tyrannies, a tyranny exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It may be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron’s cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good [...]

If you’re interested in economics at all, these questions are pretty important. Think about them for a couple of minutes, and associate them to arguments you hear from politicians who interfere in markets with legislation to try and solve problems that don’t really exist (except in their own minds). 1. If companies/corporations can simply get [...]

In America, we’re well aware of the the busybodies that want to protect us from ourselves in every sphere of life. You can’t smoke that, or eat this, or drive while doing that, or pour gas without a safety nozzle, and so on. Turns out that nanny-state busybodies are busy trying to regulate the activities [...]

There are probably not a tremendous number of issues upon which I agree with California Governor Jerry Brown. Here’s one: To the Members of the California State Senate: I am returning Senate Bill 105 without my signature. This measure would impose criminal penalties on a child under the age of 18 and his or her [...]

Gallup has a new poll that shows, by a slight majority, that fewer Americans favor “soak the rich” redistribution schemes by the government. Here’s their graph of that trend: I guess this is a good thing, that fewer people believe wealth should be redistributed by placing heavy taxes on the rich. Still nearly half of [...]

Many on the left cannot understand why Republicans push for tax cuts when we have record deficits. They refuse to look at the examples of Reagan and George W, and understand how economic growth is spurred, and government revenues go UP when taxes are cut for corporations and individuals. Blinded by their zeal for “fairness” [...]

I found an excellent online resource called Learn Liberty. It’s full of video lectures and resources you can use to educate (or re-educate) yourself about the fundamentals of liberty. These are the same ideas that the Founders used when forming our system of government here in America. Here’s an excellent (short) video lecture from Nigel [...]

Why do I say that? If you listen to this announcement, particularly the portion from 4:30 to the end, it sounds like a conservative’s description of the problems of our Federal government from last week, not 30 years ago. They say the more things change, the more they stay the same, and it’s true of [...]

Apparently, this is not an easy answer for Dick Blumenthal, the Democrat who’s running for the Senate in Connecticut. Linda McMahon, the Republican candidate knows exactly how a job gets created: “Government, government, government. Government does not create jobs. It’s very simple how you create jobs. An entrepreneur takes risk. He or she believes that [...]

(via CNN) The Postal Service announced a $3.5 billion loss for the most recent quarter. Mail volume has dropped by about 21% since 2007, but costs have skyrocketed. This was the 14th loss in 16 quarters. Revenue will continue to drop, but expenses will continue to rise largely because of union worker health plan obligations. [...]

My friend Michael over at The Write Side of My Brain reminded me of the significance of today’s date in history. 223 years ago, the founders of our great nation signed the final draft of the Constitution. Both Michael and I wonder when our representatives in the federal government are going to actually start reading it, [...]

This is obscene. In a state that’s running a massive budget deficit, and is resorting to giving taxpayers IOUs for their income tax returns, they spent $578 million on…wait for it – a school. I’m sure it’s very nice, but is that sort of luxury necessary for a learning environment? For a comparison, the article [...]

Despite all the noise that’s made about its merits, public transit is less productive and more expensive than private transportation, and does little or nothing to reduce pollution Image via Wikipedia Yeah, you read that right. And the productivity is dropping (not a huge surprise when huge government subsidies effectively remove the profit incentive). Randal [...]

and they are paid too much. I had heard assorted anecdotes that attested to this fact, but hadn’t seen a body of evidence assembled in this fashion. This is disturbing – and a little depressing if you work in the private sector. Watch this short video by the Center for Freedom and Prosperity, and see [...]

Remarks to the Manhattan Institute I want a guy just like this to be our next President. This will take about 35 minutes of your time, but it is worth every minute. Here is a principled man who (like many men) can articulate his beliefs in a way that can be clearly understood. What makes [...]
