Obamanomics by the Numbers
By marfdrat on January 2, 2012
Yes, I know: spending under George Bush was too high, too. But it wasn’t anything like this. (from Fox Nation) OBAMANOMICS BY THE NUMBERS: Every day, the U.S. government takes in $6 billion and spends $10 billion. This means that every day the federal government spends $4 billion more dollars than it has. The real [...]

San Francisco Mandates $10 Minimum Wage. Why Not Make it $25, or $50?
By marfdrat on December 14, 2011
Updated: The original USA Today report indicated that San Francisco is the first city to mandate a minimum wage that’s more than $10 per hour ($10.24 to be exact). I missed that detail. Thanks to reader “mamiel” for pointing this out. According to mamiel, the minimum wage has been $10 for a couple of years. [...]

Economics: Two Quick Questions To Ponder
By marfdrat on December 8, 2011
If you’re interested in economics at all, these questions are pretty important. Think about them for a couple of minutes, and associate them to arguments you hear from politicians who interfere in markets with legislation to try and solve problems that don’t really exist (except in their own minds). 1. If companies/corporations can simply get [...]

Massachusetts to Set Prices on Health Care Services…Anyone Remember the Gas Lines of the ’70s?
By marfdrat on November 11, 2011
Joseph Lawler has a short piece in the American Spectator’s Spectacle blog on how Massachusetts is proposing to fix the nasty problem of rising prices under RomneyCare: From the Boston Globe: BOSTON—A special commission charged with studying rising health care costs in Massachusetts is recommending the creation of an independent oversight panel to identify acceptable and [...]

Ron Paul: The Keynesian Economic Model is a Failure
By marfdrat on October 24, 2011
Ron Paul tells David Gregory how he’d fix our current economic problems: decrease the role of government with draconian cuts. “What we’re witnessing today is the failure of a Keynesian economic model,” Paul said. “And today we have to replace it with something — we either replace it with more government, more authoritarianism, more controls, [...]

Random Thoughts from Thomas Sowell
By marfdrat on October 18, 2011
This guy is a treasure. If you haven’t read any of his books (he’s written 30) or essays, check him out. His Basic Economics is one of my favorites. Here’s a sampling of his random thoughts, from a Townhall column: Like so many people, in so many countries, who started out to “spread the wealth,” [...]

Arthur Laffer: Herman Cain’s 9-9-9 Plan “Pro-Growth”
By marfdrat on October 13, 2011
Arthur Laffer is considered the “father” of supply-side economics, and famously demonstrated justification for lower tax rates with his “Laffer Curve” (read about the Laffer Curve here). Laffer says Herman Cain’s 9-9-9 plan for revamping the tax code makes a lot of sense: Famed supply-side economist Art Laffer told HUMAN EVENTS that Cain’s “9-9-9″ plan [...]

The Scariest Jobs Chart EVER – Courtesy of (zero)bama
By marfdrat on September 2, 2011
From Business Insider, here’s a depiction of the current employment recession compared with other recoveries we’ve had since 1948. Of course, everything’s going to be fixed once (zero)bama (*DfOaLG) unveils his top secret super duper jobs plan. So, no worries, right? What the chart (made by Calculated Risk) shows is the trajectory of job losses [...]

Doug Ross’s O-FAIL Index: Way Higher than When Jimmy Carter was Prez
By marfdrat on August 24, 2011
This is genius. O-FAIL takes all of the world’s instability, hysteria, deficit spending, money printing, fears of energy disruption, terrorism and war — and encapsulates them into a single, easy-to-understand number. The higher O-FAIL gets, the worse things are around the world. Check out the O-FAIL index. You can see that over the past couple [...]

Walter Williams: Ominous Parallels
By marfdrat on August 18, 2011
I love Walter Williams’ direct and unapologetic style. He does not mince words. In his latest editorial, he looks at the effects of the current administration’s policies from the perspective of history and sound economic theory. Here’s what he has to say about comparisons of Barack Obama (*DfOaLG) to Jimmy Carter: People are beginning to [...]

Obama’s Going to Give Us His “New” Economic Plan after His Vacation. Let Me Guess: More Shovel-Ready Projects?
By marfdrat on August 17, 2011
Sounds like more of the same from the Petulant Boy-King and his Council of Pointy-Headed Keynesian Advisors: (From AP) Seeking to jolt the economy, President Barack Obama will propose new ideas to create jobs and help the struggling poor and middle class in a major speech after Labor Day. And then he will try to [...]

The Great Recession vs. The Great Depression – Thankfully, No Contest – Yet.
By marfdrat on August 14, 2011
No matter how bad things seem lately, and how the lamestream media has talked up the severity of our economic downturn, it’s nothing compared to the big one. Hopefully, we can turn the corner before we get too much closer to the big one. (H/T to The Big Picture)

Interesting Stuff
By marfdrat on August 3, 2011
Good stuff I saw this morning: Popehat: Caylee Anthony’s Useful Idiots Reason: Global Temperature Trend Update for July 2011 – I found this interesting because of the comments section. No analysis was presented with this information, and defenders of both sides of the AGW argument proceeded to stand on soapboxes and shout at the other [...]

I Would Normally Wail on Krugman for His Latest NYT Whinefest…
By marfdrat on August 1, 2011
But Smitty over at The Other McCain has already done it for me. Sitting There Feeling Useless sits Paul Krugman, unable to grasp that the American people aren’t buying his swill. ” (Krugman’s quote) The worst thing you can do in these circumstances is slash government spending, since that will depress the economy even further.” Can you not grasp [...]
