There are probably not a tremendous number of issues upon which I agree with California Governor Jerry Brown. Here’s one:
What do you think? Should we pass a law that prevents idiots from making decisions to do things like this?
To the Members of the California State Senate:
I am returning Senate Bill 105 without my signature.
This measure would impose criminal penalties on a child under the age of 18 and his or her parents if the child skis or snowboards without a helmet.
While I appreciate the value of wearing a ski helmet, I am concerned about the continuing and seemingly inexorable transfer of authority from parents to the state. Not every human problem deserves a law.
I believe parents have the ability and responsibility to make good choices for their children.
Sincerely,
Edmund J. Brown
More executives need to follow Brown’s example, and turn back the tide of well-intentioned, but poorly thought-out legislation intended to save us dim-witted knuckledraggers from ourselves. These kinds of laws often come with a raft of unintended consequences that end up harming our personal liberties to a much larger degree than we are helped. Sometimes people just need to suffer the consequences of their poor decisions. It strengthens the gene pool.
