The zero tolerance idiots strike again. These kids were suspended, and face expulsion, for having an “imitation controlled substance.” So, if you have a bag of some inert substance that looks like it might be something that’s prohibited, you get suspended for that, too? What if your actions as a school administrator make you look like an idiot? Can you be fired for that? My guess is no.
Off the subject: I love how one of the kids’ last name is “Grass.”
CHESAPEAKE, Va. (AP) – Four middle school students were suspended for having a plastic bag of oregano after administrators said that the herb was a prohibited “imitation controlled substance,” according to the father of one of the boys.
Patrick Grass says Hickory Middle School officials suspended Adam Grass for 10 days and recommended expulsion for holding a baggie of the herb. Grass told The Virginian-Pilot that he was passing the bag from one student to another. He says three other boys also were suspended.
Another interesting part of the (very short) article is a spokesman for the school system explaining that they have a “lengthy appeals process” before expulsion is recommended. So, for a bag of oregano, the kids are out of school for a “lengthy” period, and the parents are subjected to countless hours away from job or other responsibilities to defend their kids against idiots conducting a kangaroo court. Nice.
