My nephew Chris brought down a couple of kayaks. He has a larger one, and another smaller one that he bought for his wife, Courtney. He and Josh were out this morning on the water, trying to ride the waves into the beach. Josh got tossed from Courtney’s boat, and the thing was launched by a wave right into Chris’ head. It only weights 27 pounds (according to Chris), but all 27 of them must have converged on exactly the right spot to do damage: it cut a pretty nasty gash in his head that bled a lot, as you’ll see.
My brother John (a trained, but no longer practicing EMT) cleaned out the cut and examined it, and sent Chris along to the Urgent Care
down in Kill Devil Hills. Josh drove him down there.
About four or five hours later, he and Josh returned. The doctor at the Urgent Care said they “see this kind of thing all the time,” and had to put nine staples in his scalp to close up the cut.
I had a picture of the staples, but it was poorly focused. any lessons learned from this? Well, if you think another kayak is going to fly up and hit you in the head, it might be a good idea to wear a helmet. However, what are the odd of this happening again to a particular individual?
