We noticed when we were here last month that storms over the winter had one a fair amount of damage. Lots of stairs had been wiped out, and the dunes looked like they had taken a real beating.
A little further south near the Currituck Club, we’re seeing more evidence of the same. There’s a big chunk missing out of this dune immediately to the left of the boardwalk we use to get to the beach (you didn’t use to be able to see the water from the walkway below the steps):

The stairs used to go straight down to the beach. Like lots of other stairs that have been rebuilt, they put in a right turn. I think this was to keep them from going out into the track that the lifeguards and rescue people use for their trucks and ATVs.

Late breaking: Josh and Chris were out kayaking, and had a little accident. Chris is fine, but it looks he’ll need to get some stitches in his head to close a nasty looking gash. Josh took him down to the Urgent Care, where they have been waiting, apparently, for about an hour. An update later, when we know more.
